Traditional or Boneless? (now w/ poll)

As a self proclaimed wing connoisseur, I tend to not really consider boneless wings real legit wings. Which they aren’t of course, they are just a white meat chicken nugget. But lets face it, they are all the rage. Places used to only have traditional wings but most places that have wings give you a choice between the two now.

Obviously the appeal of the boneless wing is that it’s easy to eat, and not messy. Most people eat’em with a fork and knife. You also don’t get any of the fat or gristle that can sometimes come along with a traditional wing. So if you’re picky about that stuff they have that appeal as well. I’ve been told by a few employees that BW3′s boneless night is more popular then their traditional wing night. I guess that’s really not that surprising. American’s love their convenience. In my opinion it’s  convenience over taste.

That’s really the whole point of a traditional wing. The taste. The crispiness of the skin. The flavor of the meat from the fat rendering out during cooling. The sauce slathering all over your lips when you take a bit. Yeah, yeah, they can be messy. But I’m willing to sacrifice a few (dozen) napkins for the extra flavor.

But honestly I eat boneless wings to. They are what they are. My wife prefers them so if we go to BW3′s on a Thursday I end up getting boneless just because they are so cheap.

I prefer my traditional wings though. ;)

So what do you prefer, and why?

I do have to agree, the boneless wings are a lot less messy, and boneless Thursday is WAY more popular that the $.45 traditional wings on Tuesday. At the location in Oak Creek, we get a lot of high school kids or kids just out of high school that come in and order large quantities for exactly the reason you listed: they’re cheap. Its hard to believe but on the first Thursday of NCAA, little Oak Creek B-dubs was 4th in the nation among corporate stores. Between the boneless wings, the beer and the basketball, people spend A LOT of money. Personally,as long as they haven’t been sitting in the wing drawer for a while, (the perks of working a B-dubs…demand fresh food at anytime) I’ll have a boneless wing over a traditional wing ANY day. Less mess. More food. I can confidently walk up and greet my next table knowing that I don’t have sauce ALL over the place.

The wing drawer you say. Hmmmm.

But yeah, that’s pretty much why they are popular. There’s no denying it.

I personally like the mess of the traditional wing. It adds to the experience. Like eating crab legs. They are the biggest pain in the ass thing to eat, but they sure are worth it.

I think I would like B-Dubs Boneless wings if they didn’t have so much breading. It’s just too much sometimes. I usually ask for an extra cut of sauce as well because they tend to not be sauced up as much as I like. That and I can’t get enough Spicy Garlic.

    Traditional.

I don’t really know why. I guess like you said it is just part of the “experience”. Traditional are more of a dark meat too. I guess I can’t really give a legit reason why I like them more. But no matter where i am you will always see a plate of traditional in front of me and not boneless.

Traditional as well. Its like Michael Jordan to basket ball, Babe Ruth to base ball, or Biggie to Hip Hop. Some things are at its best when its classic…
